Microsoft 365 backup is now available as a fully managed backup in the Duplicati Console. Connect your tenant, and Duplicati backs it up on a schedule with no agent to install and no server to run.

Microsoft keeps Microsoft 365 online, but it does not keep your data safe from deleted mailboxes, ransomware, mistaken bulk changes or an account that is simply gone. Until now, protecting that data with Duplicati meant running your own Duplicati instance somewhere and keeping it up to date. Managed backups remove that step entirely.

How it works

Each managed backup gets its own Duplicati instance, hosted by us and started on demand. When a backup is due, the Console spins the instance up, runs the backup against your Microsoft 365 tenant, verifies the result and shuts the instance down again. Nothing runs between backups, and there is nothing for you to patch, monitor or keep online.

It is the same Duplicati engine you already know. Data is deduplicated, compressed and encrypted before it leaves the instance, so the storage destination only ever sees encrypted blocks.

Set up in minutes

Setup takes three steps and no infrastructure:

1. Open Managed backups in the Duplicati Console and click Managed backup +.

2. Provide the credentials for your Microsoft 365 tenant.

3. Pick a schedule, such as daily backups.

That is the whole setup. From then on the backup runs on schedule, and you can trigger an extra run at any time with Run now. Repair, purge and database maintenance are available from the same row, so operations you would normally do on a local Duplicati install are one click away in the Console.

Storage: ours by default, yours if you prefer

By default, backups go to Duplicati Storage, our hosted cloud storage. Every Microsoft 365 seat you purchase adds 100 GB of storage to your account, so a 20-seat tenant comes with 2 TB out of the box, with no separate storage account to set up or bill.

If you would rather keep the data in your own storage, you can. Any destination Duplicati supports works here: S3-compatible object storage, Azure Blob, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud Storage, SFTP, WebDAV and the rest. You keep control of where the encrypted data lives, and Duplicati handles getting it there.

Restore to the same tenant, or a different one

Restores are done from the Console and can target either the original tenant or a different one. Same-tenant restore covers the everyday cases: a mailbox that was emptied, a file that was overwritten, a user who was offboarded too early.

Cross-tenant restore opens up cases that are usually painful with Microsoft 365: migrating a tenant, merging tenants after an acquisition, or standing up a fresh tenant after a compromise. Because the backup is independent of Microsoft, your data is portable, and it is not tied to the tenant it came from.

Microsoft 365 managed backup is available now in the Duplicati Console, alongside managed backup for Google Workspace. Log in, open the Managed backups tab and add your tenant. If you are not on the Console yet, sign up and your first backup can be running before lunch.
