For years, the "Duplicati on Synology" experience usually involved a somewhat complex dance with Docker or wrestling with manual Mono configurations. While we love a good technical challenge, we also believe that backups should be the easiest part of your day.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that Duplicati now officially supports a native Synology DSM package (.spk)!

Why Go Native?

If you’ve been running Duplicati in a Docker container, you might be wondering, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" While Docker is great, a native package offers a few "quality of life" upgrades that make a world of difference:

• Resource Efficiency: By running directly on the OS, you eliminate the overhead of the Docker daemon. This means more RAM and CPU cycles left over for your actual NAS tasks.

• Seamless Integration: The native package integrates directly into the DSM app drawer and follows the standard Synology service lifecycle.

• Simplified Permissions: No more mapping volumes or troubleshooting PUID/PGID environment variables just to let Duplicati "see" your folders.

• Automatic Start-up: It behaves exactly like any other Synology app—reliable, stable, and ready to go as soon as your NAS boots.

How to Get Started

We’ve made the transition as smooth as possible. Here is the quick-start guide to getting Duplicati running natively on your DiskStation:

1. Download the Package: Head over to the Duplicati Downloads page, choose the "Canary" channel and grab the latest .spk file tailored for your Synology architecture.

2. Open Package Center: Navigate to your DSM web interface and open the Package Center.

3. Manual Install: Click the Manual Install button in the top right corner and upload the .spk file you just downloaded.

4. Trust the Publisher: Follow the on-screen prompts (you may need to allow "Any publisher" in your settings depending on your DSM version).

5. Grant Permissions: Give Duplicati permissions to sources and/or destinations in DSM.

6. Back Up! Once installed, click the Duplicati icon in your main menu, and you’re ready to start protecting your data.

Pro Tip: If you are migrating from a Docker setup, you can export your existing backup configurations as JSON and import them into the native app to save yourself the setup time!
